GoodBudget is the digital version of the cash envelope system, and it has a loyal following for good reason: it is simple, it works on your phone, and two people can share one set of envelopes. The problem is the free plan. Ten regular envelopes and a single account run out fast for a real household budget, and lifting the limit costs $80 a year. If you are after a GoodBudget alternative that keeps the envelope method but drops the limits and the subscription, this page compares it with BudgetForge AI, a free envelope budgeting app for Windows.
Quick verdict
Choose GoodBudget if you and a partner each want to record spending from your own phones into shared envelopes. That household sync is the feature BudgetForge AI does not have, and the free plan may be enough if you keep your envelope count small.
Choose BudgetForge AI if you budget from a Windows PC and want as many envelopes and accounts as your life needs, plus reports and spending insights, without paying $80 a year. It is free, works offline, and stores everything locally with no account.
GoodBudget free plan limits
According to GoodBudget's own plan comparison, the free plan includes 10 regular envelopes, 10 annual or goal envelopes, 1 account, sharing across 2 mobile devices, and 1 year of transaction history. The paid plan, now called Premium (older reviews call it Plus), is US $10 a month or $80 a year and removes the limits: unlimited envelopes, unlimited accounts, 5 devices, 7 years of history, email support, and automatic bank sync for US banks.
In practice the envelope cap is the one people hit first. A typical household budget has 20 to 30 categories: rent, groceries, utilities, gas, insurance, phone, subscriptions, dining, kids, pets, gifts, clothing, medical, car maintenance, and so on. Ten envelopes means either lumping categories together, which weakens the method, or paying.
The single-account limit is the second wall. If you have a checking account and a credit card, the free plan already cannot represent both.
BudgetForge AI has no envelope limit, no account limit, no device count and no history limit. It is Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) only, so the trade is clear: unlimited structure on one PC versus a capped free plan that syncs between phones.
Cost over 5 years
| Period | GoodBudget Premium (annual) | GoodBudget Premium (monthly) | BudgetForge AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $80 | $120 | $0 |
| 3 years | $240 | $360 | $0 |
| 5 years | $400 | $600 | $0 |
If the free plan's limits fit your budget, GoodBudget costs nothing too. But most people who stick with envelope budgeting for more than a few months grow past ten envelopes, and then the comparison is $400 over five years versus $0.
Envelope budgeting in both apps
Both apps follow the same idea. You decide how much goes into each envelope at the start of the month, and every purchase comes out of an envelope. When the envelope is empty, you stop spending in that category or consciously move money from another one.
GoodBudget sticks closely to that model. Envelopes have a fill amount, a period (monthly, weekly, and so on), and a balance that carries over if you choose. Annual envelopes handle irregular expenses like car insurance.
BudgetForge AI uses category envelopes with a "left to spend" figure, and adds two things on top. First, zero-based mode: assign income until "To Budget" reaches $0, so the sum of your envelopes always equals the money you actually have. Second, recurring bills and a monthly plan, so fixed expenses are placed before you decide the flexible envelopes. Our guide to the digital envelope method explains how to set it up.
BudgetForge AI gives you unlimited envelopes, unlimited accounts and on-device insights on your Windows PC, free and offline.

The full table is on this page. The points that usually decide it:
- Manual entry: both free plans are manual. GoodBudget Premium adds bank sync for US banks; BudgetForge AI never links to a bank but imports CSV and QFX files you download yourself.
- Platform: GoodBudget is web plus iOS and Android. BudgetForge AI is a Windows desktop app with no mobile version.
- Sharing: GoodBudget syncs envelopes between household members on separate devices. BudgetForge AI is a single-PC app; two people can share one computer, but there is no sync.
- Data location: GoodBudget stores your budget in its cloud and requires an account. BudgetForge AI keeps a local database on your PC and uploads nothing. See offline vs cloud budgeting apps.
- Reports and insights: GoodBudget reports spending by envelope and income vs. spending. BudgetForge AI adds monthly trends, savings rate, net cash flow, and on-device insights that flag unusual transactions, overspending envelopes and unused subscriptions.
- Multi-currency: BudgetForge AI supports it; GoodBudget does not.
Who should pick which
GoodBudget is the better fit if:
- Two or more people record spending on their own phones into shared envelopes.
- You enter purchases on the spot and rarely sit at a PC.
- Ten envelopes and one account genuinely cover your budget.
- You want US bank sync and are willing to pay $80 a year.
BudgetForge AI is the better fit if:
- You have outgrown ten envelopes or need more than one account.
- You do your budgeting at a Windows PC and import bank files weekly or monthly.
- You want zero-based budgeting, recurring bills and reports alongside envelopes.
- You want your financial data stored only on your own computer, with no account.
Migrating from GoodBudget
GoodBudget exports your transaction history as CSV from the web app, and BudgetForge AI imports CSV, so moving is straightforward. Envelope definitions do not export, but you can read them off the Envelopes screen.
- Export transactions. Sign in to GoodBudget on the web, open the Transactions tab, and click the Export CSV link above the list. To limit the export by date or account, run an Advanced Search first and then export. GoodBudget's help center covers both import and export.
- Note your envelopes. Write down each envelope name, its fill amount and period. This becomes your category list.
- Install BudgetForge AI. Download it from the download page. If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then Run anyway.
- Create envelopes. Add one envelope per GoodBudget envelope, with the same monthly amount. Add as many as you need; there is no cap. Enter annual expenses as recurring bills or as envelopes you fill monthly.
- Import the CSV. Choose CSV import, select the GoodBudget file, and map Date, Name, Amount and Envelope. GoodBudget records spending as negative amounts, which imports directly. Review the preview and confirm.
- Add accounts and balances. Create each real account (checking, credit card, savings) and enter the current balance. Then assign this month's income to envelopes until "To Budget" is $0.
From then on, keep transactions current by importing your bank's CSV or QFX export. The bank CSV import guide covers common formats and column mapping.
