Comparison reflects public information as of September 4, 2026. YNAB is a trademark of its owner; we are not affiliated.
YNAB is one of the best-known zero-based budgeting apps, and it earns its reputation. It is also $109 a year, cloud-only, and requires an account before you can enter a single transaction. If you are searching for a YNAB alternative because of the price, the account requirement or the lack of an offline mode, this page compares YNAB with BudgetForge AI, a free budgeting app for Windows that stores everything on your own PC.
We keep the comparison honest. YNAB wins on several fronts, and we say so. The goal is to help you decide which tool fits your situation, not to pretend one app is perfect.
Quick verdict
Choose YNAB if you need a phone app, automatic bank imports, or a shared budget across several people. You will pay $109 a year for it, and the method and the community are excellent.
Choose BudgetForge AI if you budget from one Windows PC, prefer to keep financial data off the cloud, and want the same give-every-dollar-a-job workflow without a subscription. It is free, works fully offline, and never asks you to create an account.
The core budgeting approach is the same in both apps: income comes in, you assign it to categories until there is nothing left to assign, and you adjust as the month unfolds. The differences are in platform, price, data location and bank connectivity.
YNAB price over 1, 3 and 5 years
The YNAB price is $14.99 per month or $109 per year on the annual plan, after a 34-day free trial. There is no free tier. Here is what that adds up to compared with BudgetForge AI, which has no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads.
| Period | YNAB (annual plan) | YNAB (monthly plan) | BudgetForge AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $109 | $179.88 | $0 |
| 3 years | $327 | $539.64 | $0 |
| 5 years | $545 | $899.40 | $0 |
YNAB's own argument is that the method saves users far more than $109 a year, and for many people that is true. But the method is not proprietary. Zero-based budgeting works the same way in any tool that lets you assign income to categories and shows you what is left. If you are disciplined enough to make YNAB work, you are disciplined enough to make a free app work too.
Current pricing is on YNAB's pricing page. One plan covers up to six people, so a family that shares a budget gets more value per dollar than a single user does.
Feature comparison
The table on this page lists every feature side by side. The short version:
- Price: $109/yr vs free.
- Platform: YNAB runs in a browser and on iOS and Android. BudgetForge AI is a desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) only, with no mobile app.
- Offline: YNAB has no offline desktop mode. BudgetForge AI works without an internet connection at all times.
- Account and data: YNAB requires an account and keeps your budget in its cloud. BudgetForge AI stores your data in a local database on your PC and uploads nothing.
- Bank sync: YNAB links to your bank accounts and pulls transactions automatically. BudgetForge AI imports CSV or QFX files that you download from your bank, or you enter transactions by hand.
- Insights: BudgetForge AI includes on-device analysis that flags unusual transactions, overspending categories and unused subscriptions. YNAB offers reports but no automated spending analysis.
- Export: Both let you export to CSV. YNAB's export is available in the web app only.
Where YNAB is better
Mobile apps
YNAB's iOS and Android apps let you record a coffee purchase while you are still in line. BudgetForge AI has no mobile app, so you either enter purchases when you get back to your PC or import them later from a bank export. If you rely on entering transactions on the spot, this is a real limitation.
Automatic bank sync
YNAB connects to your bank and imports transactions on its own. With BudgetForge AI you download a CSV or QFX file from your bank's website and import it, which takes a minute or two per account each week or month. Some people prefer this because the app never touches their login. Others find it a chore.
Multiple users
One YNAB plan covers up to six people, each with their own login, all working from the same budget in real time. BudgetForge AI is a single-PC application. Two people can use it on the same computer, but there is no sync between devices.
Community and education
YNAB has years of workshops, videos, forums and a large user base. That support ecosystem matters when you are learning the method. BudgetForge AI has documentation and email support at [email protected], but nothing on YNAB's scale.
BudgetForge AI gives you zero-based budgeting, envelopes and on-device insights on your Windows PC, with no account and no subscription.

It is free
No trial clock, no plan tiers, no upsells. Version 1.21 is a single 117 MB installer for Windows, and everything in it is included. Over five years that is $545 kept in your own budget instead of someone else's.
It works offline
YNAB needs a connection to its servers. BudgetForge AI runs entirely on your PC, so you can budget on a plane, in a cabin, or during an outage. It also means the app keeps working if the company's servers ever go away, which Mint users learned the hard way in 2024 (see our Mint comparison).
Privacy by design
Your transactions, balances and categories live in a local database on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server to upload to. If privacy is why you are looking for a YNAB alternative, this is the clearest difference between the two apps.
No account, no bank login
You do not create a login, confirm an email, or hand over bank credentials. Install, open, budget. For people who have decided they do not want a third party connected to their bank, our guide to budgeting without linking a bank account walks through the workflow.
Built-in insights
The on-device insights engine looks for unusual transactions, categories that keep running over, and subscriptions you have not used. It runs locally and sends nothing to a server.
How to switch from YNAB
YNAB lets you export your plan and full transaction history as CSV files, and BudgetForge AI imports CSV. The export is only available in the YNAB web app, not the mobile apps.
- Export from YNAB. In the YNAB web app, click your plan name at the top of the left sidebar and choose Export Plan. YNAB downloads two CSV files: one with your categories and category groups, one with your transactions. The steps are documented in YNAB's export help article.
- Install BudgetForge AI. Download the installer from the download page and run it. If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then Run anyway; this appears for newly published installers that have not yet built a reputation.
- Recreate your categories. Open the plan CSV in a spreadsheet to see your category list, then create matching envelopes in BudgetForge AI. Most people trim a few categories at this point.
- Import transactions. Use the CSV import to bring in the YNAB transaction file. Map the date, payee, amount and category columns when prompted, then review the imported transactions.
- Set your starting balances and budget the month. Enter current account balances, assign this month's income to envelopes until "To Budget" reaches $0, and you are back to zero-based budgeting.
Going forward, you can keep transactions current by importing your bank's CSV or QFX export every week or two. Our guide to importing bank CSV files covers the common bank formats.
