Comparison reflects public information as of September 18, 2026. Quicken is a trademark of its owner; we are not affiliated.

Quicken has been the heavyweight of Windows personal finance since the 1980s, and it still does things no free app does. It is also a subscription now, in two flavors: Quicken Classic, the desktop program, and Quicken Simplifi, a web app. If you are looking for a Quicken alternative because you only need a household budget and do not want another annual charge, this page compares both Quicken products with BudgetForge AI, a free offline budgeting app for Windows 10 and 11.

The honest summary: Quicken is worth the money for some people and overkill for most. We will show you which group you are in.

Quicken Classic vs Simplifi: what you are actually buying

Quicken Classic (Windows desktop)

Quicken Classic is the traditional desktop program. Your data lives in a file on your PC, which is a plus. But it is sold as a yearly subscription in tiers: Deluxe at roughly $35 to $50 a year, Premier at roughly $65 to $75, and Home & Business at roughly $90 to $103, depending on promotions. Bank downloads go through Quicken's cloud service and need an active subscription. If the subscription lapses, you can still open and view your data, but downloads, updates and most features stop.

Quicken Simplifi (web and mobile)

Simplifi is Quicken's newer cloud product: a browser and phone app with linked accounts, a spending plan, and watchlists. The standard price is $5.99 a month billed annually, which is $71.88 a year. It is often promoted at $3.99 a month for the first year. Your data lives in Quicken's cloud and you need an account to use it.

BudgetForge AI

BudgetForge AI is a free desktop budgeting app for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). No subscription, no account, no ads. It works fully offline and stores everything in a local database on your PC. Transactions come in through CSV or QFX imports from your bank, or manual entry.

When Quicken is worth it

Pay for Quicken when you need features that go beyond budgeting. BudgetForge AI does not try to cover these.

  • Investment tracking. Quicken Premier downloads holdings, tracks cost basis and performance, and shows portfolio allocation. BudgetForge AI tracks cash flow, not securities.
  • Tax preparation. Quicken tags transactions with tax lines and produces reports that feed into TurboTax. If you itemize heavily or have complex deductions, that saves hours.
  • Rental property or a small business. Home & Business adds invoicing, rental income and expense tracking by property, and business categories. A budgeting app is the wrong tool for this.
  • Automatic bank downloads. If you have ten accounts and refuse to download files by hand, Quicken's connected downloads are worth something to you.
  • Decades of history in Quicken format. Long-time users with 20 years of data may reasonably decide that migration is not worth the savings.

Simplifi is worth it for a narrower group: people who want Quicken's bank connections in a simple phone-first app and are comfortable with their finances living in the cloud.

When BudgetForge AI is enough

If your goal is to know where the money goes each month and stop overspending, a free offline app covers it. BudgetForge AI handles:

  • Household budgeting with category envelopes and a "left to spend" figure, or zero-based budgeting where you assign every dollar of income until "To Budget" is $0.
  • Monthly planning and recurring bills, so rent, utilities and subscriptions are on the calendar before you spend the rest.
  • Reports for spending by category, monthly trends, savings rate, net cash flow and income vs. expenses.
  • On-device insights that flag unusual transactions, overspending categories and subscriptions you are not using, and suggest savings. Nothing is sent to a server.
  • Multi-currency accounts, CSV/QFX import, and CSV export at any time.

Many Quicken Deluxe users use exactly this subset. They pay for a program that can track a brokerage account and never add one. If that is you, you are the person this Quicken alternative is for. Our monthly budget on PC guide shows the full workflow.

BudgetForge AI gives you desktop budgeting on Windows with no subscription to renew and no account to create.

Cost over 5 years

Subscription prices look small per month and large over the life of the software. Here is what each option costs at standard (non-promotional) pricing over five years. Quicken Classic prices move with promotions, so we show the range.

ProductPer year5 years
Quicken Classic Deluxe~$35–50~$175–250
Quicken Classic Premier~$65–75~$325–375
Quicken Classic Home & Business~$90–103~$450–515
Quicken Simplifi (standard)$71.88$359.40
BudgetForge AI$0$0

The gap is $175 to $515 over five years for a household that only uses the budgeting features. That is not life-changing money, but it is a real line in a budget, and it buys nothing extra if you never touch the investment or tax tools.

There is also the lapse problem. With Quicken Classic, stopping the subscription freezes most features. With BudgetForge AI there is nothing to lapse, and your data exports to CSV whenever you want it.

Feature comparison

The table on this page lists each feature side by side. The main differences:

  • Offline: Quicken Classic runs locally but depends on the subscription and Quicken's cloud for bank downloads. Simplifi is cloud-only. BudgetForge AI is fully offline with no account.
  • Bank sync: Quicken has it. BudgetForge AI uses file import instead, which keeps your bank login out of any third-party service. See budgeting without linking a bank account.
  • Scope: Quicken covers investments, taxes and business. BudgetForge AI is budgeting and cash flow only.
  • Insights: BudgetForge AI includes on-device spending analysis. Quicken has reports but no automated insights of this kind.
  • Price: $35 to $103 a year vs free.

Migrating from Quicken to BudgetForge AI

Quicken Classic for Windows exports transactions as QIF files (File, File Export, QIF File) and most reports as CSV. BudgetForge AI imports CSV and QFX. QIF is not a listed import format, so the reliable path is CSV.

  1. Export a transaction report as CSV. In Quicken Classic, open a transaction report for the account and date range you want, then use the export option to save it as a CSV (comma-delimited) file. Repeat per account if needed. Quicken's own export guide covers the menu locations.
  2. Clean the file. Remove report header and total rows so the first row is the column names. Make sure amounts are negative for spending and positive for income, or note which column tells them apart.
  3. Install BudgetForge AI. Download it from the download page. If Windows SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", click More info and then Run anyway.
  4. Create categories. Quicken's default category tree is deep. Create envelopes only for the categories you budget against, and let the rest map to a few general ones.
  5. Import and map. Choose CSV import, pick the file, map Date, Payee, Amount and Category, and review the preview before confirming.
  6. Keep it current. Going forward, download CSV or QFX files from your bank and import them. Bank QFX files import directly without cleanup.

If you also track investments in Quicken, keep Quicken for that and use BudgetForge AI for the household budget. The two do not conflict, and many people find the budgeting is easier to stick with when it is separated from the portfolio.
